Questions about Children Classes

What age can children start learning French?
Children can start learning French as early as 2.5 years old through songs, games, stories, and play-based activities. At younger ages, exposure to French through music, books, and family activities can also be very beneficial. The best age to start is when a child is ready to participate comfortably in a group setting.

Do children need to know French before joining a class?
No. Many of our students start with little or no French. Our teachers adapt activities to different levels and help children develop their confidence and language skills step by step.

Will my child become bilingual through French classes?
French classes can significantly improve a child's French skills, but becoming bilingual requires regular exposure and long-term practice. Consistent participation, home reinforcement, and continued learning over several years provide the best results.

When do children start writing activities?
Most children begin pre-writing and writing activities around ages 4 to 5. Activities are adapted to their age and development and combine oral language practice, games, drawing, and early literacy skills.

Do you offer French classes for bilingual children?
Yes. We have programs for bilingual and advanced French-speaking children who wish to maintain and develop their French language skills.

Are your French classes for kids taught entirely in French?
Our classes use an immersion approach, allowing children to learn naturally through songs, stories, games, crafts, and interaction.

Can children take the DELF exam?
Yes. Children whose first language is English can take the DELF Prim or DELF Junior to assess their French level. We can advise families on the appropriate exam and help students prepare through private lessons or tutoring.
For bilingual children, the DELF may not always be the most appropriate assessment because the levels tested are often below their actual language abilities. We can provide certificates and language evaluations upon request.
We offer special tutoring or support for teenagers who would like to take the DELF B1 or B2 or the DALF C1 for applying to a French college. We can also help Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate students to prepare for their exams. Private lessons are a very effective and a successful way of ensuring the best scores on any exam!

Why are different ages or levels sometimes combined in children's French classes?
Mixed-age or mixed-level classes can be very beneficial. Younger children learn from older children, while older students develop confidence and leadership skills. This setup also creates more opportunities for natural communication in French and mirrors real-life language use.

My child is very young. Why do you include coloring or early writing activities?
Coloring, drawing, and early writing activities help develop fine motor skills, concentration, and early literacy. Activities are always adapted to the child's age and are combined with songs, games, movement, and oral French activities.
