Description of children's classes

We offer immersion classes for complete beginners (from 1.5 to 17 years old); and specialized classes for French speaking children. We develop hands-on curricula to guarantee personalized learning. Every child is different and has personal learning needs. We make sure that our young students feel comfortable from the beginning. Only in a playful and fun environment, they will be able to learn. On the other hand, our young students will learn a lot of authentic French. In our classes your child will not just learn words through flash cards and a translation method; or just sing songs whose meaning he/she may not even understand... He/she will progress in a natural and action-based language environment.

To make sure we offer kids the best possible French education, our group classes are in small groups. At the French Academy we choose quality over quantity.

Les Moineaux (1.5 to 4 years) - French and English speakers

- Children will be immersed in the language though playful activities, songs, dance, stories, games, and more. Parents or caregivers can contribute by encouraging the children. Crafts, drawings will develop the fine motor abilities of the children. Interaction wit puppets will make talking French really fun!

- The class is in full immersion and therefore suited for French or English speaking children. At a young age, children are very intuitive and beginners will learn fast. French speaking children will talk and interact more, while English speakers will need more time to pronounce the words, but they understand very fast.
Babies and toddlers will build new vocabulary though puppets, images, songs and situations, the same way they are learning the language spoken at home.

- Typical program:
Greetings, songs and dance
Meeting our friends (Monsieur nez rouge, Grabouilla la sorcière, les souris, ...)
Talk, sing and dance
Story time and little craft/image project
Au revoir!

Every quarter we cover seasonal themes and topics children love (animals, food, family, fairy tales...)

- The plus:
+ We recreate an authentic language environment (no flash cards methodology!)
+ Teachers are native speakers (no accent!)
+ Child focused approach

Parent Participation and Responsibility

One parent or caregiver must attend class with their child(ren). Accompaniment is limited to one parent or caregiver only -no other adults or children may attend. Each parent or caregiver is responsible for the well-being of their child and is strongly encouraged to participate in all the class activities.

Code of Conduct
If a child becomes disruptive, the parent or caregiver will take him/her out of the class until he/she calms down in order to preserve a constructive learning environment.

Les Poussins (4-6 years) - French and English speakers

- A playful class with activities similar to what children would do in a French maternelle: they learn words and sentences, using them in songs, dance, games, and stories. Crafts, drawings and pre-school/ kindergarten writing activities will develop their fine motor abilities. For older children, we introduce some writing activities to get started with the French alphabet, and sound/letter recognition in simple words.

- The class is in full immersion and therefore suited for French or English speaking children. At a young age, children are very intuitive and beginners will learn fast. French speaking children will talk and interact more. English speakers will need more time to pronounce the words, however their understanding builds quickly.

- Typical program:
Greetings, songs and dance
Numbers and letters routine
Meeting our friends (Monsieur nez rouge, Grabouilla la sorcière, les souris, ...)
Interacting on our topic (talk, sing and dance)
Word recognition activity
Story time and little craft/writing project
Au revoir!

- The plus:
+ We recreate an authentic language environment (no flash cards methodology!)
+ Teachers are native speakers (no accent!)
+ Child focused approach

Go to the schedule to see:
- Regular Booster Classes (Saturdays) in DC (K street)
- French intensive camps on K street NW (K street) for: level 0 (beginners), level I (for teens who had 1 or 2 years in school) and II (for teens who had at least 2 years)

Curriculum of the French Boosters:
We offer activities that reinforce the school program. Often the teenagers don't understand the grammar and do not have enough time to thoroughly studiy it. Also, in school teens are not encouraged to converse enough. We will talk about themes like holidays, sport, clothing's, body parts, and review the essential grammar rules.

Creative Workshop: Art et Couleurs

For 4-12 years old

We invite children to discover Art through creative and playful workshops. Through themes, children will travel through time and artistic periods.
The workshops start with activities to learn about: observing a painting, talking about an artist, or an ancient civilization. Then it's time for creativity: the children will make their own chef d'oeuvre and take it home.

This program is tailored to creative students who are either interested in learning French (words about colors, shapes, animals, flowers, crafts, simple interactions) or are bilingual. If your child is beginner, the teachers will make sure he/she feels comfortable in an immersion environment. Plus, children are divided into groups according to their level and age.

Nous proposons aux enfants de découvrir l'Histoire de l'Art par le biais d'ateliers ludiques et créatifs. Au gré des thèmes, les enfants voyagent dans les époques historiques et les courants artistiques. Les ateliers débutent par un temps de découverte: une œuvre d'art, un mouvement artistique, un peintre, un sculpteur ou une civilisation ancienne... puis, place à la création et à la technique ! Les enfants confectionnent leurs œuvres d'Art. Dès 4 ans!
